Wananchi SC failed to finish the first round of the National Hockey League on Saturday on a perfect note, losing 3-2 to Kampala Hockey Club (KHC) Stallions despite goals from Jackson Musinguzi and Emmanuel Baguma.

Wananchi Captain Martin Okello said the absence of key players like Swaliq Isabirye who had personal responsibilities, Shafik Byamukama who was injured and Okello who was suspended due to a red card caused the defeat.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, the Stallions regained their form and handed Wananchi their first defeat of the season.

Alfred Agaba and Aaron Mutenyo scored in the first and third quarters, while Jordan Mpiima clinched the win with a decisive goal.

With the win, the Stallions moved into second place in the league standings with 24 points from nine games, just one point behind league leader Weatherhead Hockey Club.

Stallions Captain Stewart Kavuma has hailed his team’s unity and determination against the defending 2022 champions.

“We played with composure and exceptional teamwork to beat the favourite Wananchi,” Kavuma said in an interview. New Vision Sports.

He also expressed confidence in the Stallions’ championship goals despite the challenges they face.

“The fight for the league title continues and the win against a top-tier opponent puts us in the competition,” Kavuma said.

Jordan Mpiima finished the first round as the top scorer with 20 goals, followed by Wananchi’s Jordan Achaye with 15 goals, while Baguma was third with 13 goals.

On the women’s side, the Weatherhead Gazelles lost 8-0 to Wananchi SC to sit top of the league standings ahead of the KHC Swans.

With this win, Wananchi move to the top with 19 points, followed closely by Swans with 17 points and HDF in third place with 18 points.
