Tyler Adams wants next USMNT coach to be ‘ruthless’ like Premier League managers

The U.S. Soccer Federation is currently in the process of searching for the next head coach of the men’s national team after firing Gregg Berhalter in July after he failed to lead the U.S. beyond the group stage. Copa America.

U.S. Soccer Athletic Director Matt Crocker, who led the search, outlined the qualities he was looking for in the next head coach of the men’s national team, including someone with a long track record of success or, as Crocker puts it, “a streak of wins.”

But Tyler Adams, who captained the United States at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, is looking for something else in his new coach: ruthlessness.

“For myself and the young team and where we are, I think we need someone who is a little bit more ruthless,” Adams said on his podcast “The Captain,” co-hosted by Roger Bennett. “Coming in and putting everybody in their place and understanding, listen: this is what needs to be done and this is the way we’re going to do it and there’s no ifs or buts. It’s not really a conversation. It’s more of a decision that’s made and this is the way we’re going to play.

“You have to find a manager that suits the style of play of most players, the way we are and the characteristics we have, but I’m sure there are managers out there like that.”

Adams cited the vicious cycle with Premier League managers as an example of how managers with a certain style can achieve success in a short period of time, and Adams believes the US falls into that timeline.

“If everyone wants to focus on the 2026 World Cup and get the best possible result, you have to find someone who has got results. Otherwise, how can you guarantee that?” Adams said.

Fortunately for Adams, the USSF is focused on attracting “the most talented international manager possible,” according to a recent report from FOX Sports. Mauricio Pochettino, Gareth Southgate, Luis de la Fuente and Pellegrino Matarazzo have all been linked with the USMNT job.

The USSF is hoping to have a new head coach appointed in the September international window, as FOX Sports previously reported. The U.S. will play Jesse Marsch’s Canada on Sept. 7 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.
