IMSA Road America points, results: Porsche Penske Motorsport takes 1-2, solidifies title chances

Porsche Penske Motorsport took the lead in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Grand Touring Prototype championship with a 1-2 finish at Road America.

Mathieu Jaminet, driving the #6 Porsche 963 alongside Nick Tandy, held off the attacks of teammate Felipe Nasr to win the race, beating the #7 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 by 0.390 seconds.

“We had a couple of touches in the last laps, I touched the car a lot,” Jaminet told IMSA Wire Service. “This was pure IMSA racing. That’s why we love it; that’s why we want to come back every time.

RANKING: Points after Road America

“You can be nowhere the day before and nowhere at the start of the race and come back two hours later with a big trophy. Big thanks to the team who came up with the strategy, put the numbers together.”

Nasr and Dane Cameron lead Jaminet and Tandy by 100 points in the GTP standings. Jaminet took the lead during a pit stop with just under 30 minutes remaining to take his second victory of the season. Jaminet led the final 13 laps of the 14-turn, 4.048-mile road course.

“The last few laps were pretty crazy, especially when we got caught in traffic,” Nasr told IMSA Wire Service. “It got tough out there. But execution was perfect and it was a great day for Porsche Penske Motorsport with a 1-2. I feel like our race was all over the place. At one point, we had to do an extra pit stop to change the rear tail because I got hit from behind.

“It was one of those days when it was very important to score points in the race and their cars were having problems or were not getting the results they wanted. I was just one car away from the win, but congratulations to the guys in car number 6.”

Porsche Penske Motorsport earned its fourth victory of the season by winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Watkins Glen with the No. 7 car, and Laguna Seca and Road America with the No. 6 car.

Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque finished third in the Wayne Taylor Racing Andretti No. 10 Acura ARX-06, which started the race from the pole position.
