Rugby’s secret history revealed in new city centre tour

The secret history behind Rugby city centre is being revealed in a new self-guided tour this summer.

Rugby Local History Research Group organised a town centre trail that took participants on a journey through the town’s past, revealing the town’s links to the royal family of Monaco, how the hologram was invented in Rugby and more.

David Holton, the group’s Treasurer, said: “Our group is delighted to be involved in providing information for use on the local history journey and we hope it will provide participants with both an entertaining and thought-provoking introduction.

“We are so proud of our town and what its rich and diverse history has explored and continues to explore.”

The trail has been organised in collaboration with Rugby First and Hunt’s Bookshop.

Linda Lowne, Business Director at Rugby First, said: “We are all aware of and proud of Rugby’s association with the game of rugby, but the town has so much hidden history.

“The idea behind the trail idea was to bring it to life in a fun and exciting way and make people more aware of it, while also helping to increase foot traffic, spending and supporting the downtown business community during the summer.”

Suitable for older children and adults, the free tours take about an hour to complete and run from 9:30am to 3pm, excluding Sundays and public holidays, until August 31. Tours start at Hunt’s Bookshop. No reservations are required.
