Maharaj helps South Africa keep West Indies at bay on rain-hit day 3

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — The West Indies remain 212 runs behind South Africa after Keshav Maharaj took three wickets to disappoint the home team on a rain-affected third day of the first Test at Queen’s Park Oval.

Maharaj bowled a marathon series of 28 overs unchanged despite being rested due to rain interruptions that halted play for nearly 90 minutes on Friday. West Indies struggled to score runs when play resumed as the home team reached 145-4.

West Indies rallied from 114-1 to 124-4 with Maharaj quickly taking the wickets of Keacy Carty and Alick Athanaze. Jason Holder (13) and Kavem Hodge (11) then finished the session on stumps. Carty was his team’s top-scorer with 42.

Earlier on Friday, West Indies finished on 357 all out after South Africa resumed their first innings with the score at 344-8.

Jomel Warrican finished with 4-69, keeping Kagiso Rabada (21) out and Jayden Seales (3-67) bowled Lungi Ngidi at number 11. South African captain Temba Bavuma (86) and opener Tony de Zorzi (78) were the top run-scorers in the innings, with Wiaan Mulder not out on 41.

Due to rain, only 15 overs could be played on the first day.

After West Indies started the series Losing 3-0 in Englandand two of these tests are expected to be completed within three days.

Three T20 matches will be played after the two-match series.
