Badgers guard Camren Hunter cleared for full basketball activity

Wisconsin has had a tumultuous offseason with Chucky Hepburn and AJ Storrs being sent to the transfer portal for mostly NIL-related reasons, and their biggest addition might be Central Arkansas transfer Camren Hunter — and they just got some good news about their new guard.

After two stellar seasons at Central Arkansas, he missed all of last year due to injury, but college basketball insider Jon Rothstein is reporting that he has been cleared for basketball activity and is set to enter the 2024-25 season fully healthy.

Hunter, the Atlantic Sun’s 2021-22 Rookie of the Year, had a stellar sophomore season in 2022-23, averaging 16.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 rebounds per game on 42.3/31.1/78.6 shooting.

“The first thing that stands out is his physical ability to play in this league and in the Big Ten, there’s no doubt he’s ready to do it,” Badgers assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft said. “Cam is a sweet kid. Even if he has Arkansas next to his name, he fits right in.”

With Hepburn, Storr and Tyler Wahl now gone, Wisconsin is in dire need of a No. 1 option to step up on offense. Hunter has the potential to be one of the most important players on the roster and a goal threat.

“I’m really dynamic, I mean I’m a three-level scorer, but I like to get my teammates involved first,” Hunter said. “I definitely like to put pressure on the basket. I finish with two hands, I’m a two-way guard, I’ll defend, I’ll defend. I’m sneaky athletic, I’m more athletic than most people think.”

The Badgers will begin the season in a little more than 50 days with a preseason game against UW-River Falls at the Kohl Center on Oct. 30. The regular season officially begins just five days later against Holy Cross.
