Marathon swimmer ends quest to cross Lake Michigan after two days | News, Sports, Jobs

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) — A 60-year-old swimmer who crossed Lake Michigan in 1998 has ended his effort to repeat the feat

An online tracking device shows Jim Dreyer returned to shore by boat in western Michigan on Thursday, two days after he began swimming toward Wisconsin.

Dreyer was attempting to swim from Grand Haven, Michigan, to Milwaukee, a journey that would likely cover more than 80 miles (128.7 kilometers).

Dreyer, who calls himself Shark, did not respond to phone messages from The Associated Press on Friday. The U.S. Coast Guard, which patrols the Great Lakes, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and local police agencies said they did not know whether Dreyer had given up.

Dreyer’s supporters said on Facebook that Dreyer emerged from the water and was in good physical condition.

In 1998, he swam across Lake Michigan from Two Rivers, Wisconsin, to Ludington State Park, Michigan, an incredible feat that took nearly 41 hours.

Dreyer attempted to cross the lake twice in 2023 (his 25th anniversary) but had to give up due to variable weather and water conditions.
