OPPOSITION

Captain: Jake Libby

Foreign players: Nathan Smith (New Zealand)

End of 2023: Quarterfinals

Top scorer of 2023: Jake Libby (397)

The player who has taken the most goals in 2023: Josh Baker (17)

Key player: Jake Libby will again take over the captaincy of the 50-over team from club captain Brett D’Oliveira. His calming presence at the top of the order is important, as he consistently demonstrated with four half-centuries last summer, and he also has the ability to increase his goalscoring rate when required.

Keep an eye on: Harry Darley. A raw but promising fast bowler who impressed in the T20 match against New Zealand at Visit Worcestershire New Road last summer. Injuries to bowlers such as Nathan Smith, Joe Leach, Adam Finch and Ben Gibbon could provide more opportunities in the 50-over competition.

Final thought: Worcestershire’s strength appears to be their batting, with plenty of power in depth, with only Adam Hose in charge in The Hundred, but a series of long-term injuries to their seam attack may make it difficult to replicate the feat of reaching the last eight last summer.

TEAM NEWS

Somerset have announced the following squad for the match: Sean Dickson (w), George Thomas, Andy Umeed, Lewis Goldsworthy, James Rew, Josh Thomas, Archie Vaughan, Riley Meredith, Kasey Aldridge, Alfie Ogborne, Ned Leonard, Jack Leach, Shoaib Bashir and Charlie Cassell.

LOCKER ROOM VIEW

Ahead of the match, Somerset Interim Head Coach Paul Tweddle said: “The players did a fantastic job at Northants and put in a very professional performance. The atmosphere in the dressing room is excellent and we will be looking for a similar performance against Worcestershire tomorrow.

“I was really impressed with the way we bounced back from the defeat against Derbyshire. I think the way they did it showed a lot about the character of the group.

“Worcestershire have played some really good cricket in this competition and are a very strong white-ball team, so hopefully it’s a good game tomorrow.

“Our aim is obviously to try and get a home semi-final. We need to win the remaining two games and hopefully the crowd will get behind us as they have throughout the competition and do their bit to help us beat Worcestershire. The players are looking forward to putting on a show for everyone in our final home group stage game.”

PLAYER MATCHING – BROUGHT TO YOU BY COOPER ASSOCIATES

CLASSIC MATCH

We travel back to 2019 for the classic List A match between Somerset and Worcestershire.

The two teams met at New Road in the quarter-finals of the Royal London One Day Cup, with Somerset winning by 147 points.

Somerset, who had lost the toss, were invited to bat first.

Tom Banton and Azhar Ali shared a 66-run opening partnership before the Pakistani opener fell for 29. Banton and Peter Trego (37) then shared a 115-run third-wicket partnership.

James Hildreth (38 from 26), George Bartlett (24 from 16) and Craig Overton (25* from 15) provided the impetus for the innings but Banton stood out among the other batsmen who failed to pass the 40-run mark, making 112 from 103 balls.

Worcestershire’s reply started poorly, with the Overton twins dismissing Riki Wessells for 16 in the sixth over and Brett D’Oliveira being dismissed by Roelof van der Merwe as the home side reached 81 for 4 in the 19th over.

The ball was eventually bowled to Azhar Ali, who earned a place in the Somerset bowlers’ roll of honour by taking five for 354 in his seven overs, despite Worcestershire being bowled out for 190 with 12 overs remaining.
