England rugby union home ground Twickenham to be renamed Allianz Stadium

Twickenham Stadium, the home of England rugby, is to be renamed following an agreement between the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) and German insurer Allianz. The stadium’s name is to be changed following an agreement between the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) and German insurer Allianz, the RFU confirmed on Monday.

Twickenham, named after the London district where it was built in 1907, hosted its first international rugby match in 1910 when England hosted Wales, and will change its name to Allianz Stadium in September.

“(The agreement) will enable Allianz and the RFU to deliver significant support to grassroots sport through financial investments aimed at securing future investment in community sport,” the RFU said in a statement.

The sponsorship of the 82,000-capacity stadium is Allianz’s eighth sponsorship, and is reminiscent of the name change of Lansdowne Road Stadium in Ireland to Aviva Stadium after its old ground was demolished and a new one was built.
