Adrian Del Castillo hits game-winning home run in 9th inning in 2nd MLB game, D-backs beat Phillies 3-2

PHOENIX — Adrian Del Castillo hit the game-winning home run in just his second game in the majors, leading the first pitch of the ninth inning and giving the Arizona Diamondbacks a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

The Phillies came from a 2-0 deficit in the eighth inning to tie the game on Johan Rojas’ RBI double in the first off of Nick Castellanos.

That set up Del Castillo’s heroics in the ninth inning. He leapt over Jeff Hoffman’s (3-2) 97-mph fastball and blasted it into the right field seats for his first major league home run. He was surrounded at home plate by his teammates as a crowd of about 38,000 cheered.

Welcome to the big leagues, kid.

“I got goosebumps, honestly,” Del Castillo said. “I got goosebumps. It was awful. I don’t even know how to describe it.”

Arizona’s Ryne Nelson pitched 7 1/3 spectacular innings, allowing just three hits and two runs scored, drawing one walk and having nine strikeouts.

Del Castillo finished with three hits and two RBIs. He was called up this week after starting catcher Gabriel Moreno suffered a groin injury in Cleveland. In 100 games this season for Triple-A Reno, Del Castillo batted . 319 with 24 home runs and 70 RBIs.

“You can’t ask for a bigger moment for a young player,” D-Backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “I’m so excited for the guys that came through player development. I felt like I was 18 again for a few minutes.”

Justin Martinez (5-3) pitched the ninth inning and notched the D-backs’ seventh walk-off win of the year.

The Diamondbacks took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Del Castillo that looped to left-center field. Joc Pederson made it 2-0 in the third with a solo homer to right field, his 19th long-hitter of the season.

Nelson, meanwhile, put on a pretty good strikeout display, retiring the first 12 batters he faced and striking out the first 17. At one point in the sixth inning, he had thrown 51 strikeouts and thrown only 10 balls.

Nelson may have pitched for his job in the starting rotation. Merrill Kelly is expected to return from injury this weekend, giving the D-backs six starting pitchers including Zac Gallen, Jordan Montgomery, Brandon Pfaadt and Eduardo Rodriguez.

Lovullo said he won’t go with a six-man rotation, so someone needs to move to the bullpen. The manager said he’s not ready to make a decision.

“I just try to go out there and compete and do my best to make their decision as difficult as possible,” Nelson said.

Bryce Harper finally got to Nelson in the seventh inning, hitting his 26th home run of the year, a home run to left field to tie the score 2-1.

“He’s in a good spot right now,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said.

Philadelphia’s Zack Wheeler allowed two runs in seven innings of work while striking out six. The right-hander drew two walks and had eight strikeouts.
