Savea takes over as captain » allblacks.com

All Blacks assistant coach Jason Ryan has confirmed that new captain Scott Barrett will miss the first two Lipovitan-D Rugby Championship Tests against Argentina.

The first Test is in Wellington over the weekend, where number eight Ardie Savea will be captain, with hook Codie Taylor and second five-eighth Jordy Barrett as vice-captains. Harry Plummer joins the squad as a reserve for the injured Stephen Perofeta.

Ryan said Savea’s experience as a member of the leadership team and vice-captain made him the clear choice to replace Barrett.

Argentina will be a different test for the All Blacks to England and Fiji.

“Argentina have brought a different intensity to the first three Tests we’ve had, so we want to improve in the areas we need to improve in and it should be a good battle. They’re playing well.

“They bring a lot of energy and like to play with momentum. (Marcos) Kremer and (Pablo) Matera are big, abrasive players in attack.

“We need to get our rhythm right away, but it’s good to reconnect. The boys have trained in this down time.”

After a two-week break, it is important to pick up where we left off after the match against Fiji in San Diego.

“You have to improve your game every week. We’re always trying to adjust things. We had a good look at those today, a good preview, but we’re also focusing on the things we need to do much better.”

The All Blacks have learned a lot about their carry and clearing game and realised that momentum is needed in those areas.

“We felt we were right in our decision-making, which was good. We are looking forward to improving our scrum and our set-piece.

“The kids came out really well. A couple of the kids hit some good shots in the NPC preseason games over the weekend.”

England’s Maro Itoje tested his line-out, while the All Blacks had a 98% record on line-outs and they want to improve on that. Argentina played with a different defensive system, so that will be another test.

New Zealand’s influence will grow even more with the addition of Kenny Lynn as attacking coach.

Ryan said he was a good thinker of the game but did not expect much different from Argentina’s approach with Felipe Contepomi as head coach.
