Wheeler’s strong start snaps Phillies’ losing streak with 6-0 win over Mariners

SEATTLE — Kyle Schwarber led off the Philadelphia Phillies’ 6-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday with a home run and Zach Wheeler went scoreless through eight innings.

Bryson Stott, Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm each hit home runs in a five-run eighth inning to give Philadelphia breathing room. Schwarber added a double and a single for a three-hit day as the Phillies snapped their six-game losing streak.

Wheeler (11-5) allowed just two hits and had nine strikeouts in his longest outing of the season. He allowed only one runner to move on to first when Cal Raleigh hit a double off the wall in the first inning.

“I knew we needed a win today, so I just had that mentality. And I got it done,” Wheeler said. “I feel like we got some quicker outs today, so it obviously allowed me to get deeper into the game, and that’s what we needed.”

Wheeler bested Seattle’s Logan Gilbert in a battle between All-Star starting pitchers. Gilbert (6-8) started in a hole as he gave up a home run to Schwarber, a fastball up the middle of the plate, in the game’s third inning.

It was Schwarber’s 41st career home run and his 10th home run of the season.

Gilbert allowed four hits and struck out seven without allowing a walk. He threw 98 pitches in six innings, 15 of them to Nick Castellanos in the second inning, the longest inning in the major leagues this season. Castellanos fouled off six pitches before hitting a grounder toward third base.

“I definitely felt good today, but it would have been sweet to finish the series with a win and sweep it,” Gilbert said. “Especially against that team, they’re really good. It was a good series to get the win, but it’s tough to lose today.”

Harper hit a single in the fourth inning to reach 3,000 career bases. According to the Phillies, Harper is the 42nd player in history and the 12th left-handed hitter to reach that milestone before turning 32.

Philadelphia opened the scoring with a barrage of homers after taking a tight 1-0 lead into the eighth inning. Stott opened the inning with his eighth homer off Mariners reliever Yimi García. With two out, García walked Trea Turner and Seattle turned to left-hander Tayler Saucedo, who promptly gave up a two-run bomb to Harper, and Bohm followed with a home run. Bohm’s 12th homer extended his on-base streak to 22 games, the longest active streak in the majors.

JT Realmuto gave the Phillies a six-run lead with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning.

“I think these guys were frustrated and struggling, and now they’re seeing something come out of it,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “I think it’s going to be a pretty happy flight to L.A.”

Before the big eighth inning, Philadelphia caught a break in the seventh inning. Jorge Polanco hit a deep fly ball and center fielder Brandon Marsh lost it in the sun. At the warning track, he raised his glove and was surprised when the ball fell in for an out.

“My arms were out and the baseball gods put the ball right in my glove,” Marsh said. “It’s better to be good than lucky at that moment. The odds are not in our favor, but hopefully that’s the turning point.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Raleigh clutched his leg and was examined by a trainer after throwing to second to catch Marsh’s steal in the eighth. He remained in the game, but Mitch Garver replaced him as catcher in the ninth. Servais said Raleigh had a hamstring cramp and he did not expect to have any problems going forward.
