Hamilton at Ferrari for success, not retirement

Ferrari is likely to be Lewis Hamilton’s final Formula 1 team, but chairman John Elkann has rejected suggestions that the Briton’s move to the Scuderia next season is a precursor to his retirement.

Hamilton will mark a bold new chapter in his illustrious career in Abu Dhabi in December, bringing his extraordinary 13-year journey with Mercedes to a poignant end.

For many, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is a match made in motorsport heaven between the seven-time world champion and Grand Prix racing’s most successful team.

But to others, it is seen as a calculated step towards ending his illustrious career, a graceful transition into the ostentatious retirement he deserves.

But Elkann says Hamilton’s move to Maranello Home is driven by a shared desire for victory and that the Briton’s thoughts about life after F1 are far from his mind.

Asked by Corriere dello Sport if signing Hamilton was a difficult process, Elkann said: “Some things happen very quickly. This was the moment when he and Ferrari found each other.”

“He wants to win the eighth title, Ferrari wants to win and they are stronger with Lewis. He is not coming to Ferrari to enjoy his retirement and it is important to be around motivated people who want to win.”

Hamilton will turn 40 when he begins his active career with Ferrari next year. While his experience and racing prowess are unmatched, some believe his years at the top of motorsport may be a weakness when facing younger, hungrier rivals, as his last two wins have shown.

But Elkann sees Hamilton’s relative age as a valuable sign of consistency.

“There is now real competition in Formula 1, four teams very close to each other – Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes,” he explained.

“It’s important to always reach the top of your potential. Those with more experience have more consistency, as Hamilton and (Fernando) Alonso have shown, and consistency is important.”

The Ferrari President also noted the modern trend of extending the careers of athletes.

“They overcome the physical limitations that come with age with dedication and sacrifice,” Elkann said, citing other sports icons such as Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Lionel Messi and Ronaldo as examples.

“It’s also true that we are in a historical phase where we are living longer and athletes’ careers are getting longer.”

While the prospect of the experienced and determined Hamilton racing for the iconic Italian team has created huge excitement, Elkann’s comments further increase expectations for the 2025 season.
