Kyle Schwarber hits 3 home runs, scores 7 runs as Phillies beat Dodgers 9-4

LOS ANGELES — Kyle Schwarber hit three home runs and tied a career-high with seven RBIs, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-4 on Wednesday night.

The Dodgers lost two of three games in a matchup between the National League’s top two teams, cutting their lead in the NL West to three games over surging Arizona, their smallest margin since late April.

“It’s nice to finally win a series,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “We’ve been playing really good baseball lately and competing with a really good club out there.”

Schwarber’s three-run home run capped a five-run sixth inning in which the Phillies tied for first in the NL East and then took the lead. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was ejected from the game by third base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt after an interference call on Miguel Rojas during the Phillies’ outburst.

With Philadelphia trailing 4–3, Alec Bohm hit a double to left and Brandon Marsh grounded out to third on a fielder’s choice. Third baseman Kiké Hernández moved the ball to his left side and threw to Miguel Rojas. Bohm slid and was called safe by Wendelstedt, who ruled that he had interfered with Rojas.

“He was in front of the bag without the ball, and that’s the new blocking rule,” crew chief Marvin Hudson told a pool reporter. “He was also running ahead of him toward third. He was in front of third without the ball, so he blocked the runner. The runner didn’t have a lane to get to the bag.”

Roberts was accused of a mistake, and when Roberts came out of the dugout he became enraged and heckled Wendelstedt.

Wendelstedt raised his hands to signal Roberts to stop. He didn’t, and Wendelstedt turned his back on Roberts before throwing him. It was Roberts’ 12th career ejection and first of the season.

“He went out there to discuss the play,” Hudson said. “And when you go out there to discuss the play, you get thrown out of the game because you can’t discuss the play.”

Bohm scored on JT Realmuto’s RBI hit into the third off of Joe Kelly to tie it 4-4.

Kelly loaded the bases with walks to Nick Castellanos and Johan Rojas. Marsh scored on Kelly’s wild fly ball to make it 5-4. Schwarber’s 426-foot shot to right-center extended the lead to 8-4.

Schwarber hit his 27th home run in the ninth inning against Michael Grove.

“The most important thing is being able to show up for the team,” Schwarber said. “There were a lot of other great things done by the guys today.”

The Phillies tied the score 4-3 in the fifth period when Schwarber hit a two-run double into the right field corner that chased Gavin Stone.

Stone gave up a two-hit home run to Schwarber early in the game.

Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Vesia (2-4) took the loss.

After Gavin Lux’s single in the third inning, the Phillies retired their 12th consecutive batter.

Grove hit Nick Castellanos in the eighth and Matt Strahm hit Lux in the bottom of the inning.

Freddie Freeman scored three of the Dodgers’ four home runs to give his team a 4-1 lead.

Freeman’s two-RBI single also came in the first inning off Phillies starter Tyler Phillips (4-1). Teoscar Hernández doubled, Phillips hit Kevin Kiermaier and Freeman singled up the middle, scoring Hernández and tying the game 1-1. Freeman scored on a single off Miguel Rojas, who was playing his first game since July 21.

Freeman’s two-run RBI hit to left in the second period extended the lead to 4-1.

The Phillies went 3 for 3, with foul calls overturned in the first, second and fifth innings.
