49ers vs. Titans Prediction, Odds, Key Players to Watch in NFL Preseason Week 1

Two teams with completely different expectations this season will face off in the opening week of the NFL Preseason.

The San Francisco 49ers will aim to return to the Super Bowl for the second straight season, but this time they plan to win. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans will take the first steps of a new era this season with Mike Vrabel no longer their head coach and Derrick Henry now in Baltimore.

The game on Saturday night may be meaningless in the long run, but we can create meaning by placing a bet or two on it.

San Francisco 49ers

Renardo Green: There will be plenty of position competition for the 49ers throughout the preseason, mostly for the backup positions. But there is one “starting” role that is in competition, and a rookie could claim it. Renardo Green, the 49ers’ second-round pick out of Florida State, could win the starting nickel back role on the team. Keep an eye out for him on Saturday night.

Tennessee Titans

Mason Rudolph: Titans starting quarterback Will Levis will likely play a series or two, but the most interesting player at the position against the 49ers will be Mason Rudolph. He’s competing with former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Malik Willis for the backup spot, and if he wins out, there’s a chance we could see him at some point this regular season. Levis’ starting role is safe for now, but if he stumbles during the regular season, Rudolph could get a chance to prove his worth.

The 49ers not only plan on playing their starters, but they also have backups dealing with injuries heading into their first preseason game. Their backfield has several injuries, including Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell, and Isaac Guerendo, all of whom will be out, leaving them depleted on offense.

The Titans are the less talented teams, but you often see worse teams, especially those just starting out with a rebuild, play extremely competitively in the preseason. That goes for their new head coach, who will aim to start his tenure off right.

I’ll leave the points to the Titans on their home field and hope their underrated roster plays to prove themselves.

Pick: Titans -5.5
