The International Cricket Council on Thursday (August 28) charged Sri Lankan spinner Praveen Jayawickrama with breaching its anti-corruption rules. The charges relate to the 25-year-old breaching three separate rules during the 2021 season of international cricket and the Lanka Premier League.

These include:

– Article 2.4.4 – Failure to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit without undue delay the details of an application made to him for fixing future International Matches.

– Article 2.4.4 – Failure to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit without undue delay the details of an application made on behalf of a corrupt person to approach another player to fix the match in the 2021 Lanka Premier League.

– Article 2.4.7 – Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages in which corruption is attempted or proposed.

Jayawickrama will have 14 days and until August 20 to respond to the ICC’s charges. The sport’s governing body also has the authority to take action over his accusations relating to international cricket violations as well as the Lanka Premier League 2021.

Jayawickrama has played five matches in all formats for the national team since making his debut in May 2021. The last of his 15 matches for Sri Lanka was in the T20I match against Australia in June 2022. He was also part of Sri Lanka’s squad that won the 2022 Asia Cup but did not feature in the first 11 of any matches.
