Olympic cycling roundup, August 5: Track disciplines begin with women’s team sprint

Men’s team pursuit: Qualifying results

RESULTS

Paris is the 26th appearance of the team pursuit at the Olympics. Ten teams will compete in the time trial round, with only eight advancing to the first round of the head-to-head race.

Australia surprised with the fastest time of the day, 3:42.958, making it four consecutive Olympic podiums for the Aussies after winning bronze in Tokyo.

Expected medal contenders Great Britain, Denmark and Italy completed the top four. Olympic champions Italy had a tough qualifying race after a miscalculation with the number of riders remaining, but managed to secure fourth place.

France took to the track to a roaring applause from the crowd. It was France’s first Olympic track performance since 2008 and they finished fifth overall, a great result for the French. Their time of 3:45.514 was a national record for the host nation.

First round pairings:
Australia vs. Canada
Great Britain – Belgium
Denmark vs. New Zealand
Italy – France
