Rohit top-scored for India in the second ODI, making 64 off 44 balls. He hit five fours and four sixes during his stay at the crease.

India captain Rohit Sharma continued his red-hot form and scored an onslaught fifty for the Men in Blue in the second ODI against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday (August 4). The 37-year-old right-handed batsman faced a total of 44 balls and hit five fours and four sixes to score 64. He completed his fifty in 29 balls and added 97 for the first wicket alongside Shubman Gill in 13.3 overs before being dismissed by Jeffrey Vandersay.

By scoring his second fifty in the ongoing three-match ODI series, Rohit broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 120 fifty-plus scores for India as an opening player in international cricket. The Nagpur-born cricketer, who made his India debut in 2007, has 121 fifty-plus scores as an opening player.

In the list of batsmen with the most 50+ scores as an opening batsman, Australia’s David Warner sits at number 1. The star left-handed batsman, who announced his retirement from international cricket earlier this year, has 146 fifty-plus scores to his name. He is followed by West Indies legend Chris Gayle (144), Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (136), West Indies’ Desmond Haynes (131) and former South Africa captain Graeme Smith (125).

Besides breaking Tendulkar’s record for most 50+ scores as an opener, Rohit on Sunday became the first Indian opener to score 300 in international cricket. The four sixes in the second ODI helped him take his tally of sixes in ODIs to 330, one less than Gayle’s 331. Former Pakistan all-rounder and captain Shahid Afridi sits at No. 1 on the list of batsmen with most sixes in ODIs.

Afridi played in 398 matches for the Men in Green and hit 351 sixes in his 19-year ODI career.

Rohit’s 64-run knock on Sunday also helped him break Rahul Dravid’s record of 10,768 runs in ODIs for India and become the fourth-highest run-scorer for the Men in Blue in the 50-over format of the game. One of three Indian captains to win the ICC trophy, the 37-year-old Rohit has 10,831 runs in 264 ODI matches played so far.
