Wisconsin Women’s Basketball Cancun Challenge Opponents Announced

While they haven’t yet broadcast every game, the Wisconsin Badgers women’s basketball non-conference opponents are slowly becoming clearer. It was confirmed last week that Wisconsin will participate in the Cancun Challenge this year. The 19th iteration of the event will be held from Nov. 28-30 and will be played at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Mexico.

The Badgers will play a three-game round robin in the Mayan Division against the Providence Friars, San Diego State Aztecs and VCU Rams during their Thanksgiving stay in Cancun. The Riviera Division will feature BYU, Idaho State, Iowa, Rhode Island, Rice and Vermont. There will also be a men’s tournament earlier in the week featuring a number of mid-level teams looking to pick up wins for their NCAA Tournament resumes.

According to the official website, the matches will be broadcast live on FloHoops and the full schedule of the matches will be released in the coming weeks.

Last season, the Badgers (both men and women) played in the Fort Myers Tip-Off. UW suffered a heartbreaking loss to Arkansas (65-62; UW led by seven at halftime) to open the tournament, but came back to beat Boston College (82-72; Serah Williams had 18 points and eight rebounds, Ronnie Porter had eight points, eight assists and five rebounds) by double digits.

Two years ago, Wisconsin played in the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands and faced VCU, taking a big first-quarter lead before falling behind by eight points. Julie Pospisilova led the way with 27 points, six rebounds and five assists. Wisconsin beat Providence by two points in 1980 (YE, FRIARS!) and had never faced SDSU before.
