Hockey Manitoba announces 20 scholarship recipients for 2023-24 season

Manitoba Hockey has released the list of outstanding student-athletes who will receive 20 scholarships this year.

Each of these students demonstrated outstanding qualities of leadership, discipline, and commitment to academic success.

This year’s scholarship winners will continue their journey to various higher education institutions next year and get to know them below.

ORVILLE ACRES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Female Recipient) – $1,000
Buyer: Raylyn Kosowski – Heir Apparent

Raylyn Kosowski spent last season with the U18 Grand Plains Female Ice Dogs of the Rural Manitoba Female Hockey League. In her spare time, she enjoys refereeing and volunteering with local groups such as Regional Connections, Under One Roof, Dauphin and District Food Bank and Dauphin Friendship Centre. Kosowski earned high grades in her four years at Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School.

BILL ADDISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyer: Rayan Sprott – Boissevain

Rayan Sprott played hockey with the Boissevain/Souris Broncos last season, but “hockey player” is one of many roles Sprott plays throughout the year. Sprott also enjoys volleyball and baseball and helped lead his high school to the MHSAA State Championship in June. Sprott was a member of his high school’s student council and also participated in Boissevain Junior Hockey and coached the U15 program.

GEORGE ALLARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,500
Buyer: Paige Fontaine – Winnipeg

Paige Fontaine from College Jeanne-Sauve in Winnipeg spent last season with the U18 St. Vital Chill. Paige has maintained a high level of academic excellence during her time at CJS and is fluent in both English and French. Paige has spent her free time volunteering at Saint-Boniface General Hospital, helping to train and evaluate women’s hockey in Winnipeg, and working as a lifeguard and swimming instructor.

RALPH BORGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyer: Tanner Kelbert – Winnipeg

Tanner Kelbert co-captained the U18 AA Winnipeg Twins last season and led his team in scoring throughout the regular season and postseason. He attended Linden Christian School and entered his senior year with a 96% GPA. His involvement in the school community has not gone unnoticed and he has played a large role on Linden Christian’s Graduation Committee.

BOB CALDWELL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyer: Parker Rolston – Winnipeg

Parker Rolston balanced U18 AAA hockey with the Winnipeg Thrashers and academics, graduating with honors each year on the honor roll at College Churchill High School. Parker volunteered as a coach for the U13 Winnipeg Twins AA team and also volunteered as a referee for an annual outdoor tournament in his community. While in high school, he volunteered at the Festival du Voyageur each year, helping to raise funds for both his school’s graduation ceremony and the Hockey Academy, of which he was a member for many years.

ALBERT E. HORSEMAH “ABBIE” COO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyer: Quinn Sutherland – Winnipeg

Quinn Sutherland spent the last six years as a student at St. Mary’s Academy, playing last season with Flames Prep. Quinn has maintained honors status every year she has attended SMA and has been involved in various school clubs. In the summer of 2022, she was accepted into the FBI Academy, a program that includes students from across Canada and the United States. Quinn will continue her career at the University of Regina next season.

TODD ​​DAVISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000
Buyer: Hannah Reagh – Binscarth

Hannah Reagh from Binscarth, MB captained the Women’s U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs team last season, leading her team in scoring, averaging over a point per game. She volunteered at the Yellowhead Junior Chiefs Camp and assisted with CanSkate sessions in the area. A multi-sport athlete, Hannah was a member of the school golf team and also competed in badminton and track. Hannah was part of the student council and received a citizenship award for the Park West School Division.

RA “SAM” FABRO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyer: Mia McGregor – Waskada

Mia McGregor of Waskada was an assistant captain for the Women’s U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs last season, finishing third in scoring. At Waskada School, she received the Proficiency Award in grades 9-11 and was on the honor roll in grades 9-12. Mia volunteered to tutor other students on the reserves, clean community gardens, help seniors mow lawns, plant trees, raise funds and help with community barbecues.

JACK FORSYTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000

Benjamin Friesen spent his final year of minor hockey with the U18 Grunthal Red Wings. In addition to being the student body president at Green Valley School, volunteering with Grunthal’s Breakfast Club program and local food banks, Benjamin founded the Food House, a food donation initiative where donors pack groceries for those in need. Benjamin maintained at least a 92 percent GPA in each of his last four years at Green Valley.

TRUDY GALLOWAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyer: Landon Reid – Pine Falls

Landon Reid spent last season with the Powerview/Sagkeeng Wild of the WHSHL. He is the definition of a multi-sport athlete, playing volleyball, badminton, lacrosse, baseball, curling and golf; he has captained many of those teams. He also enjoys skiing, mountain biking and is a Level 3 referee. Landon maintained a 93% GPA throughout his high school career.

IAN HEATHER SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyer: Eros Bazan – Winnipeg

Eros Bazan was part of the St. Paul’s Crusaders championship series last season. Eros made the honor roll every semester at St. Paul’s and has a history of volunteering in his community. Eros dedicates his free time to Brightwater Senior Living, Manitoba Harvest, the Winnipeg Fog Association and more. He also provides snow removal and childcare services in his neighborhood.

NICK HILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000
Buyer: Callum Carnegie – Winnipeg

Callum Carnegie played the 2023-24 season for the U18 AA Winnipeg Twins, co-captained by Ralph Borger Memorial Scholarship recipient Tanner Kelbert. Callum is a Level 3 referee who spends his spare time mentoring young referees, and has also assisted with skill development through the NHL/NHLPA First Shift program. He also enjoys playing baseball, playing AA ball as a catcher. Callum helps spread the knowledge of calculus by tutoring other students.

JERRY KRUK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000
Buyer: Christopher Herman – Winnipeg

Christopher Herman captained the St. Paul’s Crusaders championship-winning team last season. A multi-sport student athlete, he also plays golf and volleyball. Christopher is involved in the St. Paul’s Student Council and runs student camps. He donates his time to local secondary schools, Tennis Manitoba, and the Winnipeg Harvest and Christmas Cheer Board. Christopher has volunteered as a coach for the Winman Volleyball Club and has volunteered with the Special Olympics.

SHELDON LANCHBERY SCHOLARSHIP – $750

Zenith Vanstone was an assistant captain for the U18 AAA Pembina Valley Female Hawks last season. The Miami, MB product graduated from Miami High School with a 96% GPA in the 12th grade. Zenith is always happy to volunteer her time, playing a vital role in her school, community and the sports world. She is a passionate, strategic planner who is highly respected by her peers. Zenith will continue her hockey career at Olds College of Agriculture and Technology in Alberta next season.

BUCK MATIOWSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyer: Reese Boguski – Heir Apparent

Reese Boguski of Dauphin is one of three recipients of a scholarship from the Female U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs this year. Reese achieved a 93% GPA in grade 12 at Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School, where she faced a heavy course load. Reese has volunteered with the Yellowhead Female Chiefs at spring and fall camps for the past three years, and also donates time to the Parkland Humane Society and Elections Manitoba.

JIM STIRLING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – 3 x $500

Jaedys Dancyt of Lac du Bonnet spent last season with the U18 Pinawa Panthers. Jaedys has been a 95% GPA for the past two years at Lac du Bonnet High School. He has been an assistant captain for the Pinawa Panthers for the past two seasons and is a very coachable athlete, according to his coaches. He volunteers in his community for minor hockey and the Lac du Bonnet Ice Fishing Derby. He also helped raise money for breast cancer during a community event.

Mackenzie Waddell – Big Point

Mackenzie Waddell spent last season at the Women’s U18 AAA Eastman Trials and wore the ‘A’ for her team her senior season. During her senior year at College Lorette Collegiate, Mackenzie maintained a 95% GPA and volunteered with the Grad Committee, the school newspaper, and CLC’s Hockey Academy, where she helped younger students develop their skills.

Cassidy Bodnaryk – Winnipeg

Cassidy Bodnaryk was a member of The Rink Hockey Academy’s Women’s U18 team last season. Cassidy was on the honor roll all four years at Shaftesbury High School, an impressive feat considering the demanding hockey program. Cassidy has dedicated time to the Assiniboine Park Zoo and The Rink Education Centre. She participates in the Asper Internship program through the Asper School of Business and the University of Manitoba.

WF TAYLOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyers: Cassidy Lesage – Reverend Mother

Cassidy Lesage spent last season at the Women’s U18 AAA Eastman Trials, where she was an assistant captain. Regarded as a terrific leader at her school, Cassidy maintained a 95% GPA her senior year at École Pointe-des-Chênes. “What really sets Cassidy apart is her unwavering integrity, kindness and genuine concern for others. She consistently goes the extra mile to support her teammates, classmates and community members, and she embodies the values ​​of sportsmanship, teamwork and service.”

DIANNE WOODS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Buyers: William Banman – Niverville

William spent the 2023-24 season with the U18 Niverville Clippers where he was a Hockey Manitoba Provincials all-star and silver medalist. William’s academic efforts are exemplary, maintaining a 96% GPA his senior season. In his spare time, William participates in the Steinbach Regional Secondary School Math Club and the Reach for the Top Team.

HOCKEY MANITOBA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750

Cami Murray was a member of the U18 Southwest Stars in 2023-24. Cami topped the league in points in her last three seasons with the club, and was the Stars’ captain for the last two seasons. At Pierson School, Cami maintained a 95% GPA in Grade 12. Cami dedicates time once a week to the Breakfast Club program and works at the local Co-op.

In addition to the on-ice experiences and fun, Hockey Manitoba and its partners recognize the importance of a strong educational foundation and award twenty (20) higher education scholarships to graduating student-member athletes each year.

“To continue to recognize outstanding contributions, Hockey Manitoba has chosen to name many of its scholarships after the following outstanding members to create a lasting legacy in their honour.”
