Dubai’s RTA awards project to widen Mall of the Emirates entrances

Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a contract worth 165 million dirhams ($44.9 million) for a project to expand and improve the entrances to Mall of the Emirates.

Launched in collaboration with integrated lifestyle provider Majid Al Futtaim Group, the initiative aims to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion around one of the city’s busiest shopping malls.

The project involves the construction of a 300-metre-long bridge across the single-lane Sheikh Zayed Road, which will provide direct access to the Mall of the Emirates car park for drivers coming from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali.

This new infrastructure is expected to reduce passenger travel time from ten minutes to one minute.

Additionally, the existing ramp at the Umm Suqeim interchange will be extended southwards.

The intersection will be improved to allow for easier movement of vehicles from Umm Suqeim Street to the bridge leading to the shopping mall parking lot.

Improvements will also include improving pedestrian and bicycle paths.

The expected reduction in travel time is not limited to those arriving from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali.

Travel times for drivers coming from Umm Suqeim will also be reduced from 15 minutes to 8 minutes, improving the efficiency and safety of the surrounding road network.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said: “Other works include improving the surface roads extending 2.5km around the mall, creating three signalled surface intersections, replacing the bus stop at the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station, converting the street next to the Kempinski Hotel from one-way to two-way, and improving pedestrian and bicycle paths.

“These improvements include pavement, lighting, traffic signals, storm water drainage system and landscaping.”

Opened in 2005, Mall of the Emirates is home to 96 food and beverage outlets, 454 retail stores, major entertainment options such as Ski Dubai and the Middle East’s largest VOX Cinema.

It is also surrounded by luxury accommodations such as Mall of the Emirates, Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates, Sheraton Mall of the Emirates Hotel and Novotel Suites Mall Avenue.
