Robert MacIntyre wins Scottish Open; Ayaka Furue wins Evian Championship | Golf

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland (AP) — Robert MacIntyre won the Scottish Open with a 70-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday for a 3-under 67 to win what felt like a major and become the first Scot in 25 years to win a national Open.

MacIntyre caught a big break on the par-5 16th when he realized he was standing on a sprinkler head in grass so deep he could barely see his ball. He took a free fall into the shorter grass and holed his approach shot from 248 yards to 6 feet and tied for the lead with Adam Scott.

After one last birdie putt, MacIntyre dropped his putter and threw a wide uppercut into a frenzied Scottish gallery in celebration.

The 27-year-old from the small coastal town of Oban won for the second time this year and last month won the Canadian Open, the fourth-oldest title in golf. Colin Montgomerie was the last Scot to win the Scottish Open in 1999.

And next week is the big one — the final major of the year, the British Open, at Royal Troon in Scotland. It is little more than a century since a British player won at Troon, but for the diminutive left-hander it felt just as big.

Scott finished with 67 points.

Rory McIlroy shot a 68 to tie for fourth place for the first time since losing his lead in the final minutes of the U.S. Open last month at Pinehurst No. 2.

LPGA Tour and Women’s European Tour

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — Japan’s Ayaka Furue won the Evian Championship, claiming her first major title by holed a 12-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th hole.

Furue, 24, finished with a 6-under 65 to beat Australian Stephanie Kyriacou (67) by one stroke, while Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit was one stroke behind with a 63.

Heading to the 18th hole, Furue and Kyriacou were tied at 17 under with Tavatanakit in the clubhouse.

Furue also won the 2022 Women’s Scottish Open.

American number one Nelly Korda tied for 26th place at 5-under with a 68.

PGA Tour Champions

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Ernie Els won the Kaulig Companies Championship for his first major title, firing a 2-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over YE Yang at windy Firestone.

Els, who started the round one shot behind defending champion Steve Stricker, made bogey after hitting the water on the par-5 16th hole and then made par on the final two holes. Yang made bogey with a 66 on the par-4 18th hole.

Els became the first player to win three PGA Tour Champions this season and won for the sixth time on the over-50 tour. The 54-year-old South African has won four major championships — the U.S. Open in 1994 and ’97 and the British Open in 2002 and ’12.

Els opened with rounds of 68 and 64 before finishing at 10-under 270. The Hall of Fame inductee earned $525,000 and a spot in The Players Championship in March.

2020 and 2022 champion Jerry Kelly finished third at 7-under with a 69. Stricker, also the 2021 champion at Firestone, tied for fourth with a 73 at 6-under.

PGA Tour and European Tour

NICHOLASVILLE, Kentucky (AP) — Harry Hall won the ISCO Championship with a 45-foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff to win his first PGA Tour title.

The 26-year-old Englishman closed with a 3-under 69 to advance to a playoff with Matt NeSmith, Pierceson Coody, Zac Blair and Rico Hoey. They finished at 22-under 266 on Keene Trace’s Champions Course in the event co-sanctioned by the European Tour.

Hall struggled for par on the first extra hole, the par-4 18th, driving left into the long grass, hitting the front greenside bunker and pitching to within a foot. NeSmith’s 8-foot birdie attempt survived when it drifted to the right, while Blair and Hoey dropped in. On the next drive to the 18th in the playoff, Hall, NeSmith and Coody all missed birdie putts, with NeSmith coming closest at 12 feet.

Hall ended the game with a shot from the right side on the 209-yard, par-3 ninth hole after NeSmith and Coody missed their putts.

NeSmith and Blair each scored 64 points in back-to-back games about two hours before the final matchup.

Hoey (69) entered the final hole of regulation time with a one-shot lead but made bogey after his wedge-shaped shot bounced off the green and hit the rocks on the edge of the pond.

LIV Golf League

SOTOGRANDE, Spain (AP) — Sergio Garcia won the LIV Golf Andalucia for his first victory on the Saudi-funded tour, overcoming a seven-stroke deficit and beating Anirban Lahiri on the second hole of a play-off.

Garcia, 44, thrilled the home crowd with a 5-under 66 at Valderrama to beat Lahiri (73) and then won with a par on the second extra hole. Garcia ended a four-year winless streak with his 37th professional title.

García’s Fireballs also defeated the Crushers in a playoff to win the team championship, the first time in LIV Golf history that both the individual and team championships were decided in the playoffs.

Korn Ferry Tour

BERTHOUD, Colorado (AP) — Chilean Cristobal Del Solar won The Ascendant, finishing with a 6-under 66 and two eagles for a four-stroke victory, winning his first Korn Ferry Tour title.

Del Solar completed his PGA Tour membership for the upcoming season and moved up to No. 5 in the season standings. He made a 33-foot eagle putt on the 5th hole and a 40-footer on the 15th hole, then birdied the 16th and 18th holes to finish in 22 under at TPC Colorado.

Del Solar became the first player to shoot 57 in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event with a 13-under 57 at the Astara Golf Championship in Colombia in February.

Matthew Riedel (66) and Brian Campbell (67) tied for second.
