SPORTS BRIEF NEWS: MCC men’s soccer team earns second straight win | News, Sports, Jobs


The Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team pulled off a 2-0 victory over Hawkeye on Wednesday despite playing with one man down in the final 30 minutes.

The Tigers (2-1-1) are looking for their second straight win and will continue play with a match against Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minn., on Saturday.

Wednesday’s match ended goalless in the first half before Alejandro Vientimilla broke the tie in the 46th minute with an assist from David Ospina. The Tigers scored again five minutes later with a goal from Pedro Costa to make it 2-0.

Matheus de Silva was sent off with 30 minutes left in the match but MCC survived the setback. Joao Augusto kept a clean sheet and made six saves.

Bobcat nets dominant win over Hoover

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown volleyball team improved to 2-0 with a 3-0 win over host Des Moines Hoover on Tuesday, defeating the Huskies 25-6, 25-6, 25-8.

The Bobcats had a balanced offensive attack, led by seniors Kennedy Feldman, Madison Rogers, Olivia Holmgren, Ellie Hughes and Sydney Kapayou with three kills each. Hughes paced the setters with eight assists, Gaby Estabrook had five and Lauren O’Neal had two. The Bobcats totaled 20 kills and finished with a .469 hitting efficiency in the dominant win.

Rogers and Holmgren each recorded solo blocks for the Bobcat defense, while Gianna Baune’s two digs topped Hoover’s limited offense. Marshalltown had 23 service aces on the night while serving 60-70. Estabrook was 14-for-14 with eight aces, while Bella Avise was 9-for-9 with four aces.

The Bobcats return to action on Thursday at the Apgar Invitational, hosting Solon, Waterloo Columbus and Waverly-Shell Rock in round-robin action beginning at 5 p.m. at the Roundhouse.

GMG volleyball team beats Clarksville in three-set match

CLARKSVILLE — The GMG volleyball team improved its lead to 6-1 with a three-set victory over Clarksville in Iowa Star Conference play on Tuesday.

The Wolverines won the cross-divisional clash 25-10, 25-9, 25-16.

Makayla Pendleton led the GMG attack with nine points, while Olivia Maddux had six. Setter Hadlee Hempy had 15 assists in the match.

Landry August led the Wolverine defense with seven digs, while Pendleton also recorded two of the team’s four blocks at the net.

August also served 24-for-25 with a team-leading five aces. Hempy served 17-for-17 with three aces and Ava Maddux served 9-for-9 with three aces. Aubree Runner was also perfect with 16-for-16 serves.

Spartans lose to Tigers in conference opener

ELDORA — Class 2A No. 5 South Hardin held off No. 14 Grundy Center with a three-set volleyball win in NICL West Division play on Tuesday.

The host Tigers achieved their third win in the last five away games at the Grundy Center, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-20.

Ryanne Brubaker led the way for the Spartans (3-1, 0-1), recording nine kills and one of her five blocks. Kayden Muller added six kills, a team-high 10 digs and one block, and Raelyn Steinmeyer contributed three kills and eight digs. Lauren Zajac had 12 total assists and Caturella Brown added six more.

Jordann Van Wechel served 12 of 12 at the Grundy Center, while Muller hit 11 of 12 with three of his team’s seven aces.

Ava Salvo led South Hardin (6-2, 1-0) with 17 points.

UNI’s Anderson honored by Missouri Valley

CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa left guard Blake Anderson has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Anderson’s blocking, the first weekly award of his career, helped the Panther’s running game record the fourth-most total rushing yards in the last 15 seasons and record its first 300+ rushing yard game since 2016.

Anderson’s blocks paved the way for running back Tye Edwards to have the first multi-touchdown game of his career, including a 54-yard touchdown run.
