Shakur Stevenson Talks Gervonta Davis and Explains Promotion Status

Shakur Stevenson is a great interview.

The 27-year-old WBC lightweight champion clearly shows his heart, wants to be great and loves his job. Combine that with his world-class talent in the ring and you have a pretty compelling presence in boxing.

Stevenson was in Los Angeles for the huge card, which also featured his mentor and friend Terence Crawford, who is competing for the world title in the fourth weight class on Saturday.

Stevenson was interviewed by Boxing News while in Los Angeles and the promotional free agent covered a number of topics. Here’s the full interview:

In addition to giving his predictions for the upcoming rematches between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol and Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, Stevenson also reiterated his desire and assurance that he will eventually face WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.

Stevenson has also expressed his disappointment with Vasily Lomachenko’s decision not to fight him in the past, although he respected and admired the Ukrainian big man when they were both at Top Rank. When Stevenson was asked about potentially signing with Matchroom and Eddie Hearn, the former revealed that he has yet to decide which promoter he will sign with next.

There were rumors that Stevenson had reached a deal with undefeated Golden Boy fighter William Zepeda, but the latter’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya called the news “fake news” and Stevenson has not confirmed anything on his end.

Zepeda would be a perfect opponent for Stevenson at this stage of his career. The former is a legitimate threat. He is 28 years old and has 27 knockout wins in 31 professional fights.

Zepeda is a punishing body puncher with a forward-coming style and excellent fuel supply. Stevenson would have a speed advantage that would be sufficient, but there is no doubting the respect he would earn if he beats Zepeda.

Stevenson’s contract with Top Rank expired following his unanimous decision win over Artem Harutyunyan in July.

Despite many members of the boxing community describing the performance as boring, a campaign to sign Stevenson was immediately launched, with Matchroom and Golden Boy also jumping into the ring.

Even Top Rank has not been ruled out in a potential merger. Stevenson could also choose to go independent, as his “big brother” Terence Crawford did, which would put him in line with his younger brother Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season.

November 23 is a critical date because Davis was originally scheduled to face Lomachenko. With Lomachenko opting out for the rest of the year, Davis needs an opponent, and that could be Stevenson. The next bit of news we get about either man’s future will test things out about the other’s next move.
