Portland Timbers grant wish to Guatemalan teen with kidney failure

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – An unforgettable week in the big city for Edson’s youth dreams culminated in game night against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park.

Edson is an 18-year-old Guatemalan kid who absorbs everything going on around him on his first match day in Soccer City, USA.

“It was really exciting. It’s hard to describe but it was really good, really nice,” Edson said.

His translator, Maria, said: “He heard about the team from his friends and he didn’t know they were so good, he didn’t expect them to be so good, but after coming here he was very surprised and excited by how good they were!”

FOX 12’s Nick Krupke sat down one-on-one with new Timbers head coach Phil Neville, who has the club playing its best game in a long time.

Edson’s family came to Portland because he was undergoing treatment for kidney failure.

The lifelong player’s wish was to train with the pros. Working with Make a Wish Oregon, the Timbers made that happen and more during an inclusive time with the team during practice on Thursday.

“It was really good! It was actually more than I expected,” Edson said. “They played really well and it was good to be with them.”

Edson’s next biggest wish is to have a kidney transplant.

Her mother, Roxana, was touched by the outpouring of love in the Rose City.

“I just want to thank God that we’re here and I want people to help us and Edson and I’m really grateful to everyone for helping Edson and his wish,” Roxana said.
