Australia Boomers beat France, stats, highlights, Dante Exum injury, Josh Giddey, Dyson Daniels, Patty Mills

The Boomers completed their preparations for the Paris Games in dramatic fashion, beating France 83-82 in the final seconds of their final warm-up match.

Australia were trailing 82-81 with 2.5 seconds left in the game, but Josh Giddey, known as the ‘SLOB Wizard’ during his time with Oklahoma City, showed why he was nicknamed the ‘SLOB Wizard’ when he made a perfect pass down the sideline to Dyson Daniels to put him ahead.

But it was astonishing how wide Daniels was able to get into a position. The Bendigo international made a quick turn to pass the French defence and then score the winning goal.

Daniels attracted attention with his performances in Australia’s four friendlies, despite being selected for last year’s World Cup squad but receiving limited playing time.

It’s clear that Brian Goorjian trusts Daniels more this time around, and he doesn’t give the Boomers coach a chance to question him on the matter; he finishes the game against France with 14 points, 5 assists and as many steals.

Daniels has been a game-changer on defense, but that was to be expected as he has already proven to be one of the NBA’s most underrated players on that end of the floor.

Daniels’ development and increased confidence with the ball in his hands is an added bonus for the Boomers.

It becomes easier for Goorjian to give Daniels and his devastating defense more playing time without giving up too many goal passes. The 21-year-old shot 2-of-4 from three-point range and 6-of-9 from the field in Monday morning’s win.

Daniels’ defense will, of course, allow the Boomers to play the style of basketball they want, with his stops creating transition opportunities, like when he intercepted a pass in the first quarter that led to Patty Mills’ four-point play.

Speaking of Mills, he is starting to catch fire at the right time after an impressive shooting performance.

The veteran guard went 3-for-7 from three-point range and 7-for-9 from the field to lead his team in scoring with 24 points, continuing to shake off a worrisome shooting slump from earlier in the month.

Mills was a shadow of his former self in the warm-up matches against China and was ineffective as a shooter in Australia’s loss to Team USA in Abu Dhabi.

But Mills has since made a major comeback, first leading the Boomers to victory over Serbia and then scoring 15 points in a win over Puerto Rico.

Giddey continued to impress with his ability to get down low and into the paint, as the Bulls guard tallied 20 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, the same number of blocks and 7 turnovers.

There are also injury concerns in the match; ESPN’s Olgun Uluç reported that Dante Exum has a dislocated finger.

Jock Landale also played for just nine minutes and sat on the bench in the second half, while Uluc reported that there were no injury concerns for the Boomers big man.

Australia will begin their Olympic campaign against Spain on Saturday evening.
